Your first dub

Turn the dub on for a YouTube video and see what happens next.

This page assumes the extension is installed and you have chosen Local or Server. If not, start with Install the extension.

Turn it on

  1. Open a video on YouTube.
  2. Click the myDubber icon in the toolbar.
  3. Under Languages, set From to the language of the video, or leave Detect automatically. Set To to the language you want to hear.
  4. Turn on Dub this tab.

With the local backend, you don’t need to start anything by hand: the backend starts by itself when a dub is turned on. The first start takes longer while the models load, and the popup shows their progress.

What you will see

The video pauses and a Translating… badge appears over it. myDubber needs a few seconds of translated speech ready before it can play in sync. Once the dub is ready, the video plays on its own.

From then on:

  • You hear each speaker in the new language, in a voice cloned from their own, with the original music and sounds kept underneath.
  • Pause, seek and change the speed in YouTube’s player as usual. The dub follows.
  • If the dub needs more time, the video waits for it instead of playing ahead without sound.

Read the status line

The line under the popup’s header shows what the dub is doing:

  • Opening the video…
    Meaning
    myDubber is reading the video
  • Translating…
    Meaning
The first part of the dub is being made
  • Dubbing
    Meaning
    The dub is playing
  • Live
    Meaning
    Dubbing a live stream
  • Waiting for a video
    Meaning
The tab has no video yet

Next to the status you may see how many seconds of dub are ready ahead, the backend’s speed compared to real time, and how many speakers it has heard so far.

If the backend can’t keep up, the popup says so and suggests what to do. See Troubleshooting.

Turn it off

Click the icon and turn off Dub this tab. The original sound comes back as it was.

With the local backend, it stops by itself 10 minutes after the last dub and frees the GPU.
