What myDubber sends where, on Local and on Server.

This page explains what leaves your computer when you use myDubber, with each backend. The full text, with who keeps what and for how long, is the Privacy policy.

What the extension sends

The extension runs only on YouTube pages you open, and only in tabs where you turned the dub on. It sends the backend:

  • the video’s address;
  • the playback position;
  • the languages you chose;
  • playback events: play, pause, seek, speed, and whether the tab is visible.

Nothing else: no page content, no browsing history.

Your settings, such as languages, backend and theme, are kept in Chrome’s extension storage. Chrome may sync them between your own browsers.

On Local

The local backend runs on your computer and accepts requests only from the extension, on your own machine.

  • It fetches the video’s audio from YouTube, as your browser would.
  • Speech recognition, translation and voices all run on your GPU. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else.
  • The dub is kept in a cache on your disk and deleted after 36 hours by default.
  • Its logs stay on your disk. You can send them to us yourself when you report a problem.
  • There are no analytics, no telemetry and no crash reports.

Models and updates are downloaded from their official sources when you install or update.

On Server

On Server, the work above happens on our machines:

  • Our server receives the video’s address, the playback position and your languages, and makes the dub.
  • Dubs are kept in a shared cache, so the next person who watches the same video gets it at once. A dub is deleted three days after anyone last watched it.
  • To count your minutes we record which video you dubbed and for how long, linked to your account.

Your account holds your email or Google sign-in and your plan. While you are signed in, the extension also tells our server which backend and profile you use, on Local too. Payments go through Paddle, our reseller; your card details never reach our servers.

Email

We send account emails, such as sign-in codes, used-up minutes or a failed payment. News and offers come only if you ticked the box for them at sign-up, and every such email has a one-click unsubscribe link.

Voices

Each speaker is dubbed in a synthetic voice modelled on their own. It is made on the fly for your viewing. The voice model is not kept beyond the cache.

Deleting your data

Local: uninstall the backend, and its folder with the cache and logs goes with it. Server: write to [email protected] from your account’s address to delete the account, and your personal data is removed within 30 days.
