Local or Server

Two ways to run the dub, and how to choose between them.

myDubber needs a backend: the program that listens to the video, translates and voices it. It can run on your own computer (Local) or on our server (Server). The extension and the dub work the same way with either.

Local

The backend is installed on your computer and runs on your NVIDIA graphics card.

  • Free, no subscription.
  • Needs Windows, an NVIDIA GPU with 6 GB of video memory or more, and about 15 GB of disk.
  • Speech recognition, translation and voices all run on your machine. Nothing is sent to us.
  • Works without an account on the Light profile. Signing in, even on the Free plan, unlocks Medium and Full.
  • How good and how fast the dub is depends on your GPU. See Profiles.

Linux and macOS versions of the local backend are on the way. Windows with NVIDIA works today.

Server

The backend runs on our GPUs. Your computer only plays the result.

  • Works on any computer with Chrome, including laptops with a weak GPU or no NVIDIA card.
  • Needs an account.
  • Videos someone has already dubbed start at once from the shared cache.
  • Measured in minutes you watch with the dub on. See Minutes and limits.

The Server backend is not open yet. You can sign up now and we’ll write to you when it opens.

Which one to pick

Pick Local if you have a Windows PC with an NVIDIA card of 8 GB or more and don’t mind a one-time download of several gigabytes.

Pick Server if you are on a Mac, on Linux, on a laptop without a strong NVIDIA card, or if you want to skip the install.

On a card with less than 4 GB free, the installer warns you and recommends Server.

You can switch at any time. See Switch between Local and Server. Plans and prices are on the pricing page.
