Where myDubber works today and how it fits into a video site.
myDubber works on YouTube today: recorded videos and live streams on youtube.com.
YouTube
On YouTube, myDubber works with:
- regular videos and recorded streams;
- live streams, about 14 seconds behind the live edge (see Live streams).
myDubber runs only on YouTube pages you open, and only in tabs where you turned on Dub this tab. Other tabs are not touched.
How myDubber fits into the player
To stay in sync, myDubber needs to know exactly what the video player is doing. For each site it has an adapter: a small piece of the extension that reads the player’s time and follows its controls.
On YouTube the adapter:
- reads the video’s position, including the position inside a live stream;
- follows play, pause, seeking and playback speed, so the dub does the same;
- notices ads and waits for them to end before dubbing;
- notices when you open another video in the same tab.
That is why myDubber can’t simply work on any page with a video: each site needs its own adapter.
Moving between videos
The dub belongs to the tab, not to one video. When you open another video in a dubbed tab, the dub of the old video stops and the tab waits for the new one. The popup shows Waiting for a video.
With the local backend, a tab with no playing video goes to Standby: the backend stays off until a video plays, then starts again by itself.
Other browsers
myDubber is a Chrome extension. It also runs in Microsoft Edge.
Other sites
Other video sites need their own adapters. Until then, myDubber only works on YouTube.
